Grosvenor Road

Grosvenor Road was built in the 1930’s and lies just off Boreham Wood Town centre, known locally as ‘The Village’. The area is best know for its film and television studios, Grosvenor Road sits close to the BBC Elstree studios and only a short walk from Elstree film studios. Over the years many Grosvenor Road residents have been involved with the film industry in one way or another and not surprisingly the road turns up in many films and TV productions.

This snowy view of the road was taken Jan 2010,  BBC Elstree studios can be seen in the background.

At the entrance to Grosvenor Road is a building known to locals as ‘The Dutch Oven’ this was originally a bakers and Tea Room but over the years has been an Italian restaurant, a Thai restaurant, and recently opened as a Mediterranean grill / restaurant. The photo below shows the building in 2009

This unusual building is a well know local landmark and predates most of its neighbours in the High Street. The photo below, taken in the early sixties, looks out onto Boreham Wood high street with part of the The Dutch Oven visible on the right, at this time the building was roofed in green tiles, these were replaced with red ones sometime in the 1970’s

The photo was taken by Sue who still lives in Grosvenor Road!
Sadly planning permission has been granted to demolish much of the building and replace it with flats, many of us locally would be very sorry to see it go!

The next 2 photos show part of Grosvenor Road, the left taken circa 1970 (again by Sue) with a similar view taken 2010, very little has changed.

The grass verge has been replaced with tarmac, the old style concrete lamppost’s are now modern metal types and we are missing a tree or two and of course the road now sports ‘yellow  lines’.

At the bottom of Grosvenor Road is Clarendon Park. Although quite small it is the only park in the town centre and dates back to at least 1930

The photo on the left taken 2010 is looking towards BBC Elstree. There was originally a childrens play area with swings and a slide in front of the hedge but this was removed about 10 years ago. Sadly the park is under threat of redevelopment with plans to build flats on the site although there is a campaign locally to save the park, see:

There is a ‘friends group’ who support Boreham Wood’s 4 parks, Aberford, Clarendon, Maxwell and Meadow Parks, if you would like to be involved contact Hertsmere’s parks department on 020 8207 2277 Extn. 3930 for more information.

This next photo is not the press filming ‘Grosvenor Road outdoor Bath Night’ but an advert for a water company being filmed in February 2006.

A scene for the Christmas special of Holby city 2008 was filmed at the top of Grosvenor Road and this photo shows a cast member rehearsing part of the scene.

This old photo shows a fine looking dog and was perhaps taken in the late 40’s or early 50’s? I have no idea who the dog is but the backdrop for this old photo is some of   the houses in Grosvenor Road!

We would be interested to hear if you can add any information about this photo or indeed if you have any information, stories or photos about Grosvenor Road and its history.
